Getting There

Koh Chang Island, as it name suggest, is not located within the Thai mainland. It is an island that sits on the southern end of Thailand next to the town of Trat, which is located very near to the neighbouring country, Cambodia. Effectively, there is only one way to reach Koh Chang island and that is to take a ferry ride, from one of the three piers located at Trat town, to cross over to the island.

Ferry Services

There are three ferry companies namely: Koh Chang Ferry also known as Ao Thammachat (alight at Koh Chang Dan Mai Pier); CenterPoint Ferry (alight at Koh Chang Dan Kao Cabana Pier) and lastly, Ferry Koh Chang (alight at Koh Chang Sapparod Bay Pier)

Each ferry ride may take between 25 mins – 45 mins to reach Koh Chang island depending on which pier and ferry company you are using. Services runs approximately between 0700 to 1900 everyday. It cost about 80 Baht for an adult and 30 Baht for children on a on-way ticket.

Going to ferry piers at Trat town?

By Bus

There are three bus terminals from which you can take bus rides direct from Bangkok, the Thai capital, to the town of Trat / ferry piers. The journey would take about 5 hours on average.

  • Ekamai Bus Terminal: within a few mintues walk away from Ekamai BTS Station
  • Public Transportation Center: located at Suvarnabhumi Airport
  • Mo Chit Bus Terminal: located at Chatuchak, Kampaeng Petch Road

With the bus services offered by different companies, you will either be drop off direct at one of the piers or at Trat town (most often than not) where there will be waiting pick-up trucks doubling as taxis call ”songtaew”. And you would need to take one of these transport to the piers for the ferry ride.

By Van/Private Hire Cars

There is another option to hire vans which pick up passengers daily at Khao San Road. These would cost about 500 Baht each ride per pax and would take about 4-5 hours in reaching the piers. Also there are private hire cars available, usually for family or groups of friends. Pick ups can be arranged from any of your designated hotels. These could cost up to 5000 Baht per vehicle for a one way trip to Trat.

By Plane

Last but not the least, for the people who are feeling richer. One could fly in from Suvarnabhumi Airport with Bangkok Airways (the only airlines for this flight route: 4 times per day) to Trat Airport at 2500 to 4000 Baht for a one-way ticket, where it takes only a 15 minutes car ride to reach the piers.
